Largely just for myself for later roleplaying in
wilderlands because words are hard and it's useful to know this sort of thing at least OOCly for a game that's going hard on the adventure and fantasy stuff. Will not say no to suggestions to add to this in general.
Glossary
Equipment and acessory type things
___
Baldric- Over the shoulder belt that's used to carry things, usually a sword. Or a horn, if you're into that kind of thing.
Armor
___
Breastplate/chestplate- Front torso covering of plate armor.
Brigandine armor- Kind of body armor, usually heavy cloth, canvas or leather, with an inner metal liner that's riveted to the cloth. Can be made very very fancy and thus be very very expensive.
Cuirass- The bit of armor that makes up the front torso piece.
Chainmaille- Body armor made of tiny tiny rings linked together to make a mesh. Hard to penetrate with normal stabbing and slashing. Swords with thin enough tips or weapons with enough brute force can still break through links. Flexible but downside is terrible against blunt force on its own.
Hauberk- A shirt of chainmaille. Sometimes includes a hood.
Lamellar armor- Body armor, made of plates of iron, leather, bronze, etc laced into rows. Goes over a padded undergarment. Less restricting than scale armor. Some times of lamellar superior to maille.
Laminar armor- Body armor, horizonatal overlapping rows or bands of solid armor plating.
Mirror armor- Body armor worn over other armor that's supposed to also act against supernatural influence. Like reflecting the evil eye. Made of old school (metal, that is) mirrors.
Scale armor- Body armor, lots and lots of tiny scales of hard/hardened material layered over each other. Cloth or leather backing underneath. Better against piercing and blunt attacks than maille. Cheaper, but less flexible and less coverage.
Plate armor- Solid plates of metal fashioned into whole armor pieces. The most expensive, but also the most protective against slashing, stabbing and overall okay against blunt trauma. Academia is still out on how well it works against arrows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
